What makes a high school truly great? Can it be measured by the test scores, college acceptance rates, or number of students? Here’s the truth: high school is often seen as the gateway to college, but it’s so much more than that.
High school is a critical season for teens to discover their God-given gifts, build confidence, and prepare for a life of eternal impact.
As a parent, you want your teen to succeed academically, but most importantly, you also hope they’ll be in a place that equips them to fulfill their purpose in Christ. Choosing the best high school is about finding a community where these priorities are aligned.
So, what should you look for in a high school? Here are five key signs to guide your search.
1. A Clear Focus on College and Career Readiness
High school can feel like your teen is standing at a bustling intersection, with countless roads stretching out toward different destinations. You want to help them choose the right path — one that brings a future centered on God’s will for their lives. A high school that truly prepares for college, career, and beyond should have the resources to help your teen navigate their unique journey with clarity.
“At Eastern Christian School, we begin with the end in mind,” says Suzanne Kraai, Director of Enrollment. Our high school college and career counselors begin working with students as early as eighth grade, where students begin to tailor their course schedules for the following year and receive personalized guidance based on their hopes and dreams for the future.
In addition, the innovative WINGS Program is an internship opportunity that supports EC’s high school career readiness programs, allowing students to explore occupational interests, gain hands-on experience, and make informed decisions about their future.
I feel that EC prepared me well for graduation, college, and my future career. This school helped me to figure out who I am in the present, and the person that I want to be in the future. The community, teachers, and education have brought me where I am today and will continue to have a long-lasting impact on me.

My faith has grown abundantly as I focused more on how I can grow and spread His word. I was able to spread His love to those in the school who didn’t know Him. And when I was lost, many reminded me of my faith, and that I should strive to be the best version of myself.

What would you say to a prospective student considering joining Eastern Christian School?
If you are thinking of joining Eastern Christian School, I encourage you to follow through with that decision. It is a big change, but it is a good change. Jesus is present here, and it is a safe place for you to grow spiritually, educationally, emotionally, and mentally.
What else would you like to share about your EC experience?
Although I grew up in a Christian household, I came to EC from a public school that didn’t have Christian values. I needed a place like EC in my life, where I was able to relate to people more and understand what it means to walk towards Christ with a community.
While many schools focus solely on AP classes as the benchmark for academic rigor, Eastern Christian School also stands out with itsProject Acceleration program. Through this dual-enrollment approach, your teen can earn college credits and an official transcript while still in high school. This compliment to traditional AP classes builds a strong academic foundation, gives students a head start on their college journey, and even helps families maximize the value of their educational investment.
2. A Holistic Approach to Education
A great high school experience should be more than just a stepping stone to the next stage. It’s also a formative time when students learn:
Who they are,
What connects them to others,
And how to step into their full potential.
A school that takes a holistic approach to education understands this. They make it their mission to nurture not only academic success, but also emotional intelligence, social skills, and spiritual depth.
“We’re focused on helping students develop socially, emotionally, and spiritually,” explains Leah Genuario, Director of Publications. This is why Eastern Christian School emphasizes mentorship and community, where every student is seen and valued. This approach ensures that your teen will be in an environment dedicated to preparing high school students for life after graduation
At Eastern Christian School, our leadership, faculty, and staff work together to foster an environment that nurtures students’ faith, learning, and personal growth.

A great school recognizes that true leadership isn’t defined by titles alone — but is also about uncovering distinct strengths and serving in one’s sphere of influence. The best schools provide abundant opportunities for students to lead and leave a meaningful mark on their communities and beyond.
“The number of leadership opportunities at Eastern Christian School is unique,” notes Justin Van Dyke, Director of Marketing at EC. “With over 50 clubs and teams, students have diverse ways to discover what they’re passionate about.” From establishing a pre-healthcare club to leading sports teams, EC high schoolers are encouraged to step into leadership roles and realize their potential.
4. A Truly Christ-Centered Environment

A truly Christ-centered environment goes beyond academics — it’s about finding a place where your teen can grow their gifts, preparing them to serve as Christ’s agents of change in the world.
“At Eastern Christian School, education is deeply rooted in biblical truth,” explains Suzanne. As a covenantal school, EC partners with families to encourage students to use their heads, hearts, and hands for God, and to use discernment to create a worldview that is formed through the lens of faith.
Justin adds, “We are committed to our mission, vision, and core values to maintain eternal focus on nurturing both spiritual growth and academic excellence.” This approach ensures that students are not only academically prepared but spiritually grounded, ready to step into the world as individuals of influence and integrity.
